What Is Sublimation Printing

As you know, the method we use today to print on blanks is sublimation printing. So what is sublimation printing?

Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing is a process that involves heat to transfer prints on blanks. Sublimation only works on polyester blanks or polyester-coated blanks.

It’s so much the same as the heat transfer vinyl method(HTV). See the difference between sublimation and HTV.

How Sublimation Printing Is Done

The image is printed by a sublimation printer with sublimation inks and then transferred to the sublimation blank using a heat source like a heat press.

This is just a primary method of sublimation printing. The process is slightly different for different sublimation blanks.

E.g., sublimation on nylon differs from sublimation on faux leather.

1- Sublimation Printer

The first thing you will need is the sublimation printer filled with sublimation inks. Don’t use inkjet printers.

If you have an inkjet printer, convert your inkjet into a sublimation printer. Or buy a new sublimation printer.

Here are the best sublimation printers you can consider as a beginner.

2- Sublimation Paper

Next, you’ll need a sublimation paper. Sublimation printer prints the image on sublimation paper. Don’t use regular papers for sublimation.

Always use the best paper for sublimation. A sub sublimation papers are the best sublimation papers you can use.

3- Sublimation Blank (Glass, Mug, Tumbler, Shirt)

Thirdly, you’ll need a sublimation blank. Sublimation blanks are made of polyester or have a polyester coating on them.

Right now, glass is the sublimation blank. You can get it on Amazon.

4- Heat-Resistant Tapes

After that, you’ll need heat tapes to fix the image with the blank. Heat tapes prevent movements during sublimation.

5- Heat Press/Mug Press/Tumbler Press

Lastly, you will need a heat press (including butcher papers) to transfer the image to the glass.

A mug press is required when you’re sublimating on mugs, and a tumblers press is needed when you’re sublimating on tumblers.

Step #1 [Image Printing]

  • First, take the glass and measure its dimensions.
  • Open your image in the graphic software and resize the image according to the glass size.
  • Turn on your sublimation printer and put the sublimation paper inside it.
  • Then print the image in the highest quality (don’t mirror the image).
  • And that’s all.

Step #2 [Image Transfer]

  • Take the printed image and glass and fix the image over the glass with heat tapes.
  • Turn on the heat press and set its temperature to the seller’s guidelines. In my case, it’s 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Put the glass and image inside the heat press in a way that the glass faces downward and the image upward.
  • Put butcher paper over it and press for 90 seconds.
  • After pressing, take the glass out and let it cool.

Step #1 [Printing The Image]

  • The mug size is smaller, so I recommend printing two images on a single sublimation paper that you can use for future projects.
  • Mirror and print the image in high quality.
  • After printing, cut the image from the paper, leaving half-inches from the sides.

  • Press it for 120 seconds using the same temperature, i.e., 180 degrees Celsius
